As per legends, When Kumar Kartikeya returned to Kailash after completing his trip around the earth, he heard about Ganesha’s marriage from Narada. This angered him and being consoled by his parents and other Gods, he left for Krounch mountain.

Lord Shiva and Parvati decided to go to a krounch mountain to get him back home, but seeing them Kartikeya went further away. Eventually, Lord Shiva decided to leave a light on the mountain they visited, since then that place is known as Mallikarjuna Jyotrilingam. It is believed that Shiva and Parvati visit this place on every Amavasya and Pournami.
