నాసిక్ ఈ పేరు వెనుక అర్ధం ఏమిటంటే .. రావణాసురిడి చెల్లెలా ముక్కుని కత్తిరించిన ప్రదేశమే నాసిక్ అని చెప్తారు. గోదావరి జన్మస్థలం త్రయంబకేశ్వరమే, గౌతమి మహర్షి పేరుమీదనే గోదావరి అని పేరువచ్చింది. ఒకసారి గౌతమీ మహర్షి వరిపైరును పాడుచేస్తున్న ఆవు దూడను దర్పపోచను విసిరాడు , ఆ దర్ప తగిలి ఆవు మరణించింది.
గోహత్య పాతకం పోగుట్టుకోనుటకు శివునికోసం తపస్సు చేయగా .. శివుడు ప్రత్యక్షం కాగా . గంగను భువికి వదలమని ప్రార్దించెను. గంగమ్మ శివయ్య జాతా జూటము పైనుంచి బ్రహ్మగిరి పర్వతము పై పడి , పాయలుగా వీడి గౌతముడి పేరుమీద గౌతమి గాను , గో ప్రాణాలు వదిలిన ప్రదేశం కాబట్టి గోదావరి గాను ప్రసిద్ది చెందింది.
గౌతముని కోరిక మేరకు త్రయంబకేశ్వరుడికిగా జ్యోతిర్లింగమై విలిశాడు.
గర్భగుడికి బైటవైపుగా నాలుగు ద్వారాలతో మండపం ఉంటుంది. గర్భగుడిలో కల శివలింగం భూమికి కొంత దిగువలో ఉంటుంది. దాని నుండి నిరంతరం నీటి ఊట ఊరుతూ ఉంటుంది.
అది దేవాలయ్ం ప్రక్కన కుశావర్తనం అనే సరోవరంలో కలుస్తూ ఉంటుంది. కుశ అంటే ధర్భ, వర్తం అంతే తీర్ధం అని అర్ధం. దీనిలో స్నానం చేయడం వలన సర్వపాపాలు రోగాలు పోతాయని భక్తుల విశ్వాసం.

River Godavari originates on this hill and flows though the Bramhagiri ranges.

Gangadwar is half way to Bramhagiri mountain. There is a temple of Ganga, now known as Godavari River. Ganga appears first time here, after it vanishes from Bramhagiri Mountain. Godavari comes to Gangadwar from Brahmadri. There are 750 steps to Gangadwar. These were built by Karamsi Ranamull of Village Maska.
Nil Parvat:
Shreemant Seth Kapol has built about 200 steps. On the summit is the temple of Nilamba Matamba
Devi (Nilambika), further on is an ancient temple of Nilkantheshwar Mahadev and an idol of Parashuram. There is an old akhada or matha of the Gosavi sect and an ancient temple of Sadguru Dattatraya.
Gautam Tirtha :
Gautam Tirtha is to the south of the Ganges and the Trimbakeshwar temple. Varun being pleased
with Gautam gave this tirtha as a permanent source of water. To the north is Gautameshwar and to the south is Rameshwar Mahadev.

Indra Tirtha:
Indra Tirtha is to the east and near Kushavarta.This is known as Shakra-Kupa for Indra wiped
off his curse given by sage Gautam for enjoying Ahilya, by a bath in this tirtha.

To force Gautam to give up his penance, a friend of Ganga named Jatila took the form of Ahilya, Gautam’s wife. Gautam could make it out and cursed her to be transformed into a river. Then she begged his pardon. Gautam granted her pardon and said that she will be freed of her curse on her joining with Godavari river. This is the Ahilya-Sangam tirtha where Ganga and Godavari join. There is a temple of Sangmeshwar Mahadev.
